What Visa does
Visa is a payment network, not a bank. It connects issuing banks, which give cards to customers, with acquiring banks, which process payments for merchants. The issuer decides your credit limit, interest rate and fees; Visa sets the network rules, security standards and processing between the two sides.
Visa card numbers and BIN ranges
Every Visa card number starts with the digit 4. The first six to eight digits form the BIN (Bank Identification Number), also called the IIN, which identifies the issuing bank, the card type and often the country. The remaining digits identify the account, and the final digit is a Luhn check digit.
Visa card numbers can be 13, 16 or 19 digits long. Sixteen digits is by far the most common today; 13-digit numbers are a legacy format, and 19-digit numbers are used by some newer and prepaid products.
| Length | Where you see it |
|---|---|
| 13 | Older legacy cards, now rare |
| 16 | Standard format for most credit, debit and prepaid cards |
| 19 | Some newer, debit and prepaid products |
Visa card levels
Visa card levels describe a tier of benefits. The exact benefits are set by the issuer and differ between countries, so always check the card's own terms.
| Level | Typical positioning |
|---|---|
| Visa Classic | Entry-level card with core Visa features and worldwide acceptance. |
| Visa Gold | Mid-tier card that may add higher limits and extra services in some markets. |
| Visa Platinum | Higher tier often linked to travel assistance, purchase protection or concierge services. |
| Visa Signature | Premium tier, frequently tied to rewards cards and travel or lifestyle benefits. |
| Visa Infinite | Top consumer tier with the most extensive benefits an issuer chooses to offer. |
| Visa Business | Cards for companies and sole traders, with expense tools and employee cards. |
Visa Secure (3-D Secure)
Visa Secure is Visa's version of the EMV 3-D Secure protocol for online payments. When you pay online, the merchant can ask your issuer to confirm that the payment really comes from you.
Many payments are approved silently using device and transaction data. Riskier ones trigger a challenge, such as approving the payment in your banking app or entering a one-time code. Never share that code with anyone who contacts you.
Tokenization and contactless payments
Tokenization replaces your real card number with a different number, called a token, that only works in a specific device, wallet or merchant. If a token is stolen it is of little use elsewhere, and your physical card does not need to be replaced.
Contactless payments use the chip and a short-range radio connection. Each tap creates a one-time cryptogram, so data captured from a single transaction cannot simply be replayed. Mobile wallets combine contactless with tokenization and device unlock.
Acceptance around the world
Visa cards are accepted by a very large number of merchants and ATMs worldwide. Acceptance still depends on the merchant, the card type and local rules: some merchants decline certain prepaid cards, and fees for foreign transactions or cash withdrawals are set by your issuer.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a card is Visa?
Visa card numbers always start with 4. A BIN lookup confirms the brand, issuer and card type.
Is Visa a credit card company or a bank?
Neither exactly. Visa runs the payment network; banks and financial institutions issue the cards and set the credit terms.
What is the difference between Visa Signature and Visa Infinite?
Both are premium levels. Infinite is generally the higher tier, but the actual benefits depend on the issuer and the country.
Are Visa test card numbers real?
No. Test numbers pass the Luhn check but are not linked to any account and cannot be used to buy anything.
